Our Lucky Horseshoe
A Memoir of My 13 Years as President of the University of South Carolina

More than a memoir, Our Lucky Horseshoe, gives us a front row seat in the office of President of the University of South Carolina.

With more than 150 photos of those who helped shape the university and what it continues to represent today, the Holderman years were never dull. Inside Our Lucky Horseshoe you will gain insight as you read Jim Holderman's candid entertaining stories and anecdotes about presidents, actors, global leaders and the Pope.

The book's title refers to the central area of the university's original campus dating from 1805. Today, the Horseshoe remains the center of the statewide university community.

Jim Holderman's exuberance comes across within these pages, just as in life - authentic, passionate and enthusiastic.

Born to a former teacher and a lawyer/public servant in the mid-1930s, Jim Holderman grew up respecting the basic values of both professions. Thus, when the time came, he chose graduate study in political science at Northwestern University, where he earned his doctorate in 1962.

In early 1963, he became an assistant professor of Government and Public Affairs at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Chapaign. He held a number of educational posts across the spectrum of kindergarten through 12th grade education as Assistant State Superintendent of Public Instruction for the State of Illinois. he followed these posts with several positions in post-secondary education: Vice Chancellor of the University of Illinois, Chicago; Executive Director of the Illinois Board of Higher Education; Vice President for Educational Programs of the Lilly Endowment; and, finally, President of the University of South Carolina.

For his contributions to various levels of education in five states, Jim has been awarded fourteen honorary doctorates and received special recognition from two foreign governments.
