In early 1963, he became an assistant professor of Government and Public Affairs at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Chapaign. He held a number of educational posts across the spectrum of kindergarten through 12th grade education as Assistant State Superintendent of Public Instruction for the State of Illinois. he followed these posts with several positions in post-secondary education: Vice Chancellor of the University of Illinois, Chicago; Executive Director of the Illinois Board of Higher Education; Vice President for Educational Programs of the Lilly Endowment; and, finally, President of the University of South Carolina.
For his contributions to various levels of education in five states, Jim has been awarded fourteen honorary doctorates and received special recognition from two foreign governments.
