Reflections on Snipe
Reflections on Snipe is a delightful compendium of information on snipe behavior and habitats; gunning history; stories from the field; and the pleasures of hunting with good companions, whether human or canine.
In these pages you'll trod bogs in Ireland, Africa, South America, and - in the States - wetlands from Louisiana to Alaska. Mathewson puts it this way: "Whether in James Bay or on Vancouver Island, along the crystal clear trout streams of Idaho or the high desert marshes of eastern Oregon, deep in the bogs of Louisiana, the coastal plains of Texas, or perhaps a flooded cornfield in Indiana, snipe, by and large, are where you find them."
With Mathewson has written articles for more than forty magazines over the past thirty years. He has successfully hunted all the native upland and shore birds in the United States and Canada; thirty-two species in all. Aside from bird hunting, he enjoys collecting Confederate postage stamps, fly fishing, trapping, rebuilding old motorcars, and brewing ales and porters. He lives in Oregon.
Eldridge Hardy's art is well known to sportmen and collectors of sporting art. An avid sportsman, his art appears frequently in such sporting magazines as Double Gun Journal, Sporting Classics, Gray's Sporting Journal, Shooting Sportsman, and others. His drawings and paintings have also enhanced many books. He lives in Colorado.
